In Hinduism, Rudra ("howler") is a storm, the hunt, death, wild nature and a wind god. He has arrows which cause disease in whomever they hit, god, human or animal. With Diti, he is the father of the Maruts. Rudra is also another name of Lord Shiva, the lord of destruction, according to Hinduism. The famous hymn, Shri Rudram is a Vedic chant that is still chanted today. According to Adi Sankara's commentary on the Vishnu sahasranama, Rudra means "One who makes all beings cry at the time of cosmic dissolution." Alternatively, Rudra means "One who gives speech.
Rudra-Siva (Sanskrit) Siva in the form of the regenerating god; also "the great Yogi, the forefather of all the Adepts -- in Esotericism one of the greatest Kings of the Divine Dynasties. Called 'the Earliest' and the 'Last,' he is the patron of the Third, Fourth, and the Fifth Root-Races. For, in his earliest character, he is the ascetic Dig-ambara, 'clothed with the Elements,' Trilochana, 'the three-eyed'; Pancha-anana, 'the five-faced,' an allusion to the past four and the present fifth race, for, though five-faced, he is only 'four-armed,' as the fifth race is still alive. He is the 'God of Time,' Saturn-Kronos, as his damaru (drum), in the shape of an hour-glass, shows; and if he is accused of having cut off Brahma's fifth head, and left him with only four, it is again an allusion to a certain degree in initiation, and also to the Races" |

In idol worship, we offer food to Him with our hand and eat it. We put jewels on statue of Lord and take them away by next day. The statue is in our house. Why don’t we keep jewels on statue forever? Wealth is in our house only. Is it proper to take out wealth that is donated to Lord? When we donate even to human being, we do not take back. We do not consider statue equal to even an ordinary human being. We say that statue is not inert object and is living Lord in our eyes. If it is not statue and is living Lord, why are we doing such tricks? While giving jewels to statue, statue is living Lord according to us. But when we take away jewels we treat it as an inert statue. If statue is alive, why is it not eating our food? Why is it not talking to us? We will not accept human form of Lord because if we offer food He will eat. If we give jewels to Him, He will wear and will not return to us. On one side we say statue is not inert. But on other hand our practical behavior proves that statue is inert. We are fooling Lord. We show false love on Him. We want to impress Him so that He feels that we have real love on Him and then get all our desires fulfilled. We do not show even drop of real love, which we show to our children. We give pot of cow milk to our children. Atleast give one spoon of cow milk to Lord. If we can’t give even that spoon of cow milk, keep quite. Lord did not beg us for cow milk.
If we cannot please Lord, keep silent. He will not be furious with us. Don’t show false love and fool Him to get boons. If we can’t give even a drop of cow milk, keep quite. But don’t give pot of donkey milk, which is false love and make Lord furious. It is not wrong if we cannot please Lord but it is greatest sin if we fool Him by false love and try to get benefit from Him. Without practical sacrifice that proves real love, all traditional activities and dramatic dress like silk cloth, ash on forehead and bead garlands are only means of cheating and fooling Lord. |

The generation and propagation of the divine knowledge is not a waste. Certainly, all will not change. A few will partially change. One or two in this minority will change completely (Manushyanam…Gita). Majority remains as it is. They are always concentrating on the worldly bonds only. Their goal is money, family, comforts, fame etc., only.
At the maximum they may attend some workshops to get relief from stress because they are tired with stress by the problems to attain their goals. For them work is worship. Their ultimate & utmost spiritual effort is only participation in workshop on stress relief so that they can be reactivated for fresh efforts to achieve worldly goals by improving their professional skills. It is just commercial advertisement! Spiritual preachers also changed according to public because tendency of today is that ruler should go according to needs of public in democracy. A king may do like that who is politician aspiring for position, power and wealth. But spiritual preacher should not come down to such level. He should guide people to right path without any compromise of truth. People should follow knowledge. But today knowledge is following people. People need only fresh strength in worldly work. Spiritual preacher limited himself to that particular lowest level only which is needed for public. All other higher levels are just mentioned as a formality. Here spiritual preacher should impress on life after death. He should preach about unimaginable stress which is to be faced by people after death in hell. Islam & Christianity speak about permanent hell. There is only one enquiry at end of this only one human life. After that enquiry, either permanent place in abode of God or permanent hell will be result of divine judgment. Such concept is absolutely correct and is also universal. at lotus feet of datta swami surya

The frame of the cosmic reality, according to ancient Hindu thought, consists of the three fundamental states called evolution (Shrishthi), existence (sthiti), and involution (samhara) that acts in a cyclic process of infinity. Each one of the forms is controlled by a God, named Brahma (the creator), Vishnu (the preserver) and Siva/Shiva (the destroyer); these three Gods are called the Trinity. Shiva, being the last to complete the cycle from where the new cycle starts, is known as Mahadeo, the Supreme Divinity. The iconographic form of the Shiva, the Linga represents the unity of the three states of cosmos (shown in above figure). The Linga consists of the three parts. The first is a square base of three-layers at the bottom showing the three mythical realms (lokas), symbolizing evolution the place of Brahma. The second is an octagonal round form in the middle showing the eight directions, symbolizing existence or perseverance the place of Vishnu; and third is a cylinder at the top with a spherical end, symbolizing involution or completion of the cosmic cycle the place of Shiva. This icon shows the supreme state of integrity, the ultimate form of Shiva linga itself is a symbol of cosmic mandala. As Sadasiva (eternal reality) Shiva is represented as linga, standing also for 'total knowledge'. As Rudra, the destroyer, his consort is Kali. As Bhairava, the terrible destroyer, his consort is Durga. As a jovial god living in the Himalaya his wife is Parvati. As possessor of all forms of divine power Shiva rooms at the bottom of everything that is moving, that is how he is called Ishvara, derived from I-cara, i.e. I the centre, and cara, the rhythm of movement. Shiva is also depicted as cosmic dancer, Tandava Nartakari, the one who keeps up the rhythm of the world in cosmos.

Word Adhyayanam means actually to know Veda & not to recite Veda. Ofcourse in olden days when there was no printing Veda was also recited. But knowledge of Veda was discussed & practiced. Veda itself means knowledge. Shastra says that mere recitation of Veda is worst (Anarthajnah Paathakaadhamah) without knowing knowledge. At present Vedas are published & computerized & so there is no need of mere recitation. Please note once again that Adhyayanam means to know knowledge of Veda & not mere recitation. Veda mocked at person who simply recites Veda as divine animal (Devaanaam Pasurahaha).
Lord Shiva is said to be Pashupati, which means that, He is Lord of animals. Animal can never understand meaning of any word & it simply follows sound. Similarly, blind people are just following sound produced on recitation without knowing meaning of any word. When people are unable to understand even these ordinary Vedic rituals, how can they grasp essence of climax of Veda (Vedanta)? Overall essence of all rituals is only offering food & money (Dakshina) to deserving divine person or atleast to beggar. This very essence is lost because all undeserving priests are benefited, who do not know simple meaning of simple rituals. You must select deserving divine person by his knowledge & practice, but not by his external dress. Deservingness is mainly characterized by absence of desire (Akamahatasya…Veda). Today, there is no correlation between hymn & ritual. You are simply performing ritual as guided by ignorant priest, who is also your brother in not knowing any word in hymn. When correlation is lost, you are doing something unrelated & foolish action, which is irrelevant to meaning & sense of hymns. Ex: you pour ghee in fire & burning oil in religious lights, which do not bring any divine fruit & instead brings sin by polluting atmosphere. At lotus feet of swami surya |

ll OM NAMAH SHIVAYA llBilvapatra contains 2% Shiva tatva. By offering bilvapatra to the Shivpindi on Mahashivratri, the manifest Shiva tatva near the stalk of the bilvapatra gets activated. Due to this, waves of chaitanya as well as Shiva tatva are emitted by the bilvapatra. The bilvapatra attracts 20% of the Shiva tatva present in the Shivpindi towards itself. By immersing this bilvapatra in water or by placing it in grains, the Shiva tatva present in the bilvapatra is transmitted to them. The Shiva tatva in the bilvapatra is activated to a larger extent on Mondays when it transmits 10% of the Shiva tatva and sattvikta. On other days only 1% of the Shiva tatva is activated in the bilvapatra.Bilvarchan Offering bilvapatra to the Shivpindi and chanting the mantra 'Om Namah Shivaya' with each offering is known as bilvarchan. Continue offering the bilvapatra until the pindi is completely covered. Offer the bilvapatra from the lower part of the pindi. By starting from the feet of the idol, more benefit is derived and the idol can be covered completely. - Brahma-tatva (22.02.2004, 9.30 p.m.)

Hindus attach paramount importance to spiritual gurus. Gurus are often equated with God and always regarded as a link between the individual and the Immortal. Just as the moon shines by reflecting the light of the sun, and glorifies it, all disciples can dazzle like the moon by gaining from their Gurus.
What is Guru Purnima? The full moon day in the Hindu month of Ashad (July-August) is observed as the auspicious day of Guru Purnima, a day sacred to the memory of the great sage Vyasa. All Hindus are indebted to this ancient saint who edited the four Vedas, wrote the 18 Puranas, the Mahabharata and the Srimad Bhagavata. Vyasa even taught Dattatreya, who is regarded as the Guru of Gurus. Significance of Guru Purnima On this day, all spiritual aspirants and devotees worship Vyasa in honor of his divine personage and all disciples perform a 'puja' of their respective spiritual preceptor or 'Gurudevs'. This day is of deep significance to the farmers, for it heralds the setting in of the much-needed rains, as the advent of cool showers usher in fresh life in the fields. It is a good time to begin your spiritual lessons. Traditionally, spiritual seekers commence to intensify their spiritual 'sadhana' from this day. The period 'Chaturmas' ("four months") begins from this day. In the past, wandering spiritual masters and their disciples used to settle down at a place to study and discourse on the Brahma Sutras composed by Vyasa, and engage themselves in Vedantic discussions.

Damru is one of the attributes of several deities and gods (of Hindus), particularly of Shiva. Damru is a small hourglass shaped drum, and is particularly associated with Shiva in his aspect as the Nataraja, performing the cosmic dance of tandava. The sound of damru represents the primeval sound and the rhythm from which, according to cosmology, the universe emerges and in which it dissolves into, before re-emerging again. Indian Musical Instrument Damaru is the most common hour-glass drum in India. There are two drumheads on each side of the resonator which are laced together with cord. Near the centre of the lacing are two loose knoted cords. The knots on each end strike both heads to produce a rattling sound. This is affected by rotating the drum rapidly in alternating directions. The pitch is bent by squeezing the lacing. The damaru has very strong cultural associations. It is strongly associated with the God Shiva
A small drum with two sides alienated from each other by a thin neck-like structure represents the two utterly different states of existence, unclear and clear. When a damaru is shaken, the sound formed denotes Nada, the cosmic sound of AUM, which can be heard during deep meditation. delete |

Unclad body covered with ashes: This form of Lord Shiva depicts that Lord Shiva’s presence is much higher than this physical phenomenon. According to some scholars, Shiva’s body smeared with cemetery ash points to the philosophy of the life and death and the fact that death is the ultimate reality of the life.
After removing the dried bel leaves (nirmalya) and bathing, either only three horizontal stripes are drawn on the visible side of the pindi (divine phallus) or a circle is drawn in the middle of the stripes. This is referred to as Shiva’s eye (Shivaksha). Seekers draw three horizontal stripes on the shalunka at the seven sites, indicated for worship as given in the figure under point ‘Where should one sit during ritualistic worship?’. A circle is drawn over these stripes and white flowers are offered. The circle represents the divine birth passage. It is called Shiva’s eye (Shivaksha) or the third eye of Shiva (yogi). |

Trishul (Trident): A three-branched trident shown adjoining to Lord Shiva symbolizes His three fundamental powers will, action and knowledge. As a weapon the trident represents the instrument of punishment to the evil doer on all the three planes - spiritual, subtle and physical.
The three-pronged weapon borne by the Indian god, Lord Shiva in the role of supreme yogin, is a ritual staff (Skt. khatvanga) in the form of a trident (Skt. trishula.) In its association with Shiva, the 3 points are usually explained as standing for sat (truth,) cit [pron. chit] (awareness) and ananda (joy). |

Who is Nandi? All of us know, that he is the mount of Lord Shiva, and when the Lord dances he plays the Madhalam. He has an acute sense of rhythm, and is well versed in music. Some people have elevated him as an equal, to Lord Shiva thus bringing a sense of jealousy in Parvathi. Most times Parvathi treats Nandi as a Bull, a Mount, a Carrier, the Primary Vehicle, when she needs to take a walk with Lord Shiva, around Mount Kailas. Inwardly Parvathi relishes that Nandi is an obstacle, to all the devotees of Lord Shiva, because in all Shiva Temples, Nandi is present just in front of the gate of the Garbha Griha (sanctum sanctorum) just as a Gate Keeper, in modern parlance a durwan or security. So most devotees pray first to her first born Vinayaga, that there should not be any vignams while praying to Lord Shiva in his Koil (abode). One another reason, why the idol of Vignavinayaka is placed prominently in all Shiva Temples. In the Tamil language "Nandi" is a metaphor for a person blocking the way.
In Sanskrit, the common bull is "vrisha", meaning : righteousness or Dharma. So it is important to seek the blessings of Nandi also before one proceeds to worship Lord Shiva. As is normal with all ladies, Parvathi has also not thought of the consequences of her actions. In that, devotees who come to worship Lord Shiva in his own abode, have to pray first to Ganesha, then to Nandi and then only to Lord Shiva. Because of the close association of Nandi and Lord Shiva, some mythologies attribute leadership qualities to Nandi, since Lord Shiva made him a dhalapathi - leader of his Ganas. Like all factotums Nandi is Lord Shiva's main attendant and foremost disciple. But all this does not explain who Nandi is? Well, there are two beautiful tales as to his origin - one in the Skanda Purana, and the other in the Kurma Purana.

ll OM NAMAH SHIVAYA ll Shivratri is the time when Shiva takes a rest. Shiva rests for one 'prahar' (three hours) of the night. This 'prahar' is referred to as the Shivratri. When Lord Shiva takes rest, the function of 'Shivtatva' (Shiva Principle) ceases, i.e. Lord Shiva goes into a meditative state. Shiva's meditative state is the time when He is engrossed in His own spiritual practice. During that time, the 'Shivtatva' does not accept any tamogun (most base of the 3 elements in us - sattva, raja & tama) or any halahal (venom churned from the ocean) coming from the Universe. As a result, the ratio of halahal or the pressure of the negative energies increases. For protection from this pressure, things like 'bilva patra', white flowers, 'rudraksha' beads etc are offered to Lord Shiva. These things attract the 'Shivtatva' from the atmosphere, thus providing protection from the increasing effect of the negative energies. The Earth is a gross object. Gross objects have very low velocities i.e. they require more time to cover a specific distance in space. Gods on the other hand, are subtle hence they are capable of traversing space within a few seconds. That is why one year on the earth is equivalent to just one day of heaven. - Brahma-tatva (18.02.2004, 3.05 p.m.)

The month of Shravan, popularly known as Sawan, is the fifth month of the Hindu calender. Shravan is considered the holiest month of the year. Each Monday of this month, known as Shravan Somvar, is a special day in Shiva temples where the dharanatra hangs over the linga or the idol to bathe it with holy water, day and night. Devotees pile the linga high with Bel leaves and flowers and fast till sunset.
It is considered highly auspicious to wear a rudraksha in Shravan month. As, Mondays or Somvars of Shravan month are specially observed with austerity. All Mondays are devoted to the worship of Shiva as this day is sacred to Lord Shiva. No other Mondays of other months are so greatly honored. The belief is that in Shravan month, offering milk to Lord Shiva earns a lot of punya. |
